It has been generally accepted that foreign students who aimed to make the doctoral dissertation in English did not need Japanese ability, but there has been no research proving that until now. In this longitudinal study, we examined the study life of the foreign graduate students majoring in engineering and clarified the details of the Japanese ability they need to acquire and the activities that foreign students should participate in within their laboratory. In Lave and Wenger (1991), ”learning” is regarded as the process of participation in the ”community of practice”. Also, in the case of foreign graduate engineering students, research activities and participation to the laboratory cannot be separated, and Japanese ability is necessary to support their ”learning”. Furthermore, from the results, we suggested methods for the Japanese education of the foreign graduate engineering students.
