Effects of red cabbage resudues percolated using diatom earth (DE resudues) as a filter on the rice growth and soil improvement were examined in the pot experiment of rice. Nitrogen and phosphorus contained in red cabbage residues were mineralized readily in the soil and then absorbed by the rice plants. Silicate in DE, however, was not available to the rice in this experiment. It was observed that the application amount of DE residues to the paddy field was reasonably 1 ton (air dry matter basis) per 10a. Furthermore, DE residues considerably improved soil texture, water holding capacity and water permeability.
