1. The root elongation and root system of rice plants and the oxidizing 01 reducing condition of paddy soil in the early-, normal- or late-season culture were investigated by using the transparent plastic pots. 2. The roots of rice plants elongated rapidly when the rice plants were culti- vated in the late-season and the development of roots was the best in the earlyseason culture. 3. In the late-season culture, the reduction of soil was observed at the earliest stage after transplanting and it was the greatest in the early-seasor culture. 4. The damage or death of the roots began in the shortest days since the transplantation in the case of late-season culture, being the longest in the case oi early-season culture.
