Blood chemical data were analyzed in patients with hepatocelluar carcinoma (HCC) in order to establish the objective clinical staging system. Conventionally, clinical stages were divided into 5 stages which consisted of stage Ⅴ (15 days before death), stage Ⅳ (16 to 30 days), stage Ⅲ (31 to 60 days), stage Ⅱ (61 to 120 days) and stage Ⅰ(more than 121 days). 10 parameters were selected from 73 patients with HCC for discriminant anapysis, which consisted of WBC, lymphocytes, hemoglobin, albumin, γ-globulin, bilirubin, ALP, GOT, serum protein and urea-N. 123 cases were discriminated in each clinical stage by multivariate analysis. Discriminant analyses verified 74% of the stage Ⅴ cases, and 94% of those not belonging to stage Ⅴ, 68% of the stage Ⅳ cases, 49% of the stage Ⅲ cases, 65% of the stage Ⅱ cases and 63% of the stage Ⅰ cases. It suggests that blood chemical data are available to discriminate in clinical stages in patients with HCC by multivariate analysis.
