Notes on the Osteology and Systematic Position of Symphysanodon typus BLEEKER.
Katayama Masao
Descriptions
KAMOHARA and KATAYAMA (1959) recorded Symphysanodon typus BLEEKER from Kashiwajima, Mochi Prefecture and placed it under the Anthinae of the Serranidae. This fish was first described by BLEEKER (1878) as a new genus and species from New Guinea. Symphysanodon was regarded as a genus allied to Anthias (Serranidae) by FOWLER (1928), but MUNRO (1958), and GOSLINE and BROCK (1960)included it in the Lutianjdae. The present osteological study of Symphysanodon typus BLEEKER was attempted to settle such confusion and differences of opinions as noted above. The specime treated in this study is 181mm in standard length collected at Kashiwajima, Kochi Pregfecture, October 15, 1957.
