The development of opacification in the rat lens after trauma produced by incising the anterior part of the lens was studied and followed by procion yellow as an ectracellular tracer. Furthemore, in order to prevent traimatic cataract development, a fibrinogen-based tissue adhesive was used for the closure of the defect in the lens capsule. Small lens incision as long as 1mm in diameter could not produce progressive cataract, In larger incision as long as 1.5mm in diameter, a posterior subcapsular opacity was formed early and progressive traumatic cataract occurred. The treatment using the fibrin glue delayed the opacitification of the wound and the posterior subcapsular cortex and resulted in prevention of traumatic cataract in the majority of the rats. The uptake of Procion yellow in rats which were treated with the fibrin glue was less than that in rats which were not treated with it.
