Physics of negative ion production in negative ion volume sources
Creators Fukumasa Osamu
The basic physics of negative hydrogen ion production in volume sources is presented. Negative ions(H^-) are formed in the plasma by dissociative attachement of cold electrons to highly vibrationally excited hydrogen molecules, and these vibrational molecules are produced by energetic electron impact. From the view point of controlling source plasmas, principal mechanism of H^- production, some techniques (including cesium injection) for enhancement of H^- production are discussed.
