Descriptions
Since the early 1950, 0ne of the present authors (H.D.)did occasionally paleo/rock magnetic studies on the Quaternary basalts of the district of Hagi City and her vicinity (→Domen 1953).This time, about a hundred oriented basalt sampleswere collected from 10 sites in this district. 0n these samples, a paleomagnetic study was performed and the obtained data are shown in this report. As far as the present study is concerned, no reversal is found among those NRM submittedto the measurement.NRM(natural remanent magnetization) Few oriented rock samples were collected at the respective site within the district of Hagi City and her vicinity (at the coast of the Japan Sea).Fig.L is a map showing sampling sites. Several cylindrical specimens having 2.5cm of both diameter and height were cutout from each sample. The test specimen thus prepared was submitted to measuring its NRM by means of an astatic magnetometer. The obtained data on NRM of the submitted specimen are illustrated as a stereographic projection on Schmidt”s net (Figs.2&3).The numerals for those NRM directions are summerized as Table l together with some statistics, positions of VGP (virtual paleogeomagnetic poles)and the polarity classification (Domen 1978).
