Descriptions
This research is based on a visit made to, and school survey carried out at, the Nelson Mandela Schule in the State of Berlin, Germany. The specific circumstances of the democratic education carried out there were identified, and consideration given as to how such education is best carried out. School meetings and class activities were observed, and questions were asked of those in charge of the pupils. The school meetings were made up not only of pupil representatives, but of teaching staff and representatives of parents and guardians as well, and were run on a voluntary basis. Furthermore, the activities of the various classes involved game-like content where a stance of concentration was nurtured in each and every pupil. Remodeling pupils’ meetings and class activities, which are special activities in Japan, so that the pupils, teaching staff, parents and guardians, and people from the community can work together on activities would help achieve democratic education.
