Surgical outcomes for gastric cancer in Yamaguchi Rosai Hospital

In Yamaguchi Rosai hospital, 414 out of 453 patients diagnosed as having gastric cancers underwent a gastrectomy during a recentl2-year period from 1989 to 2000. In this study, we investigated surgical outcomes of these operated patients. Three patients (0.7%) died postoperatively. Five-year survival rates according to stage classification were :100% in stage I a, 93.6% in I b, 75.9% in II, 57.0% in Lila, 20.3% in III b, 12.2% in IV a, and 0% in Nb. Five-year survival rates of according to depth of tumor invasion were 100% in m, 96.2% in sin, 88.1% in mp, 67.5% in ss, 34.3% in se, and 23.9% in si. Five-year survival rate of according to lymphnode metastasis were : 96.0% in n0, 73.4% in ni, 21.4% in n2, and 0% in n3. These factors were compared to the results obtained in 18 representative institutions and hospitals in Japan in 1999. Although five-year survival rates in stage Nb cancer in our hospital were inferior to those institutions and hospitals, five-year survival rates in stage I ～ IV Na, T1 ～ T4, and n1～3 tumors were superior or comparable. It is thought that some aggressive adjuvant therapy is necessary for patients with stage IV b gastric cancer in the hospital.
