〔Exp.1〕 Field and pot experiments on the effect of seed treatmanet and foliar application of cultured fermentation product by Lactobacillus acidophilus (FPL) were carried out to rice and some vegetables for two years (1983-1984). (1)The growth of young seediling of rice, especially the root, in the seed treatment with FPL was better than in untreatment (control). After transplanting, the rooting, the growth of early stage and the tille number per hill were also better than those in control. Rice yield with seed treatmanet was 3-5 per cent larger than that of control. The growth of young plants of some vegetables was also promoted by seed treatment with FPL. (2) Effects of foliar application of FPL on the growth of rice was not observed, but its additional effect to seed treatment indicated a tendency of the increase of crop and plant yield. However, the reasonable time and period of foliar application of FPL to plants should be further examined. 〔Exp.2〕 Researches were carried out on the activity of physiological active subtance in fermentation product by Lactobacillus acidophilus as promoting factor to plant growth and on the effect of FPL seed treatment to microflora in spermosphere and rhizosphere. (3) Activities of cytokinin and auxin were observed in both types of FPL (for seed treatment and foliar application) through the incubation test of tabaco callus and radish cotyledon. FPL which was 10^<-3> to 10^<-4>―fold diluted with water indicated the activities corresponded to 10^<-7>~10^<-9>M of benzyladenine (cytokinin) or 10^<-7>M of naphthaleneacetic acid (auxin). (4) Fractions having cytokinin-and auxin-like activites were detected by high performance liquid chromotography. Cytokinin-like activity was indicated in two fractions (peak^<(a)> and ^<(b)>) by the growth test of radish cotyledon. (5) Bacterial number in rhizosphere soil was higher in seed treatment with FPL than in untreatment during the growth of young seeding of rice. And the ratio of bacterial numver/fungal number (B/F value) was also higher in the FPL treatment. (6) B/F values in the soils of spermosphere and rhizosphere of some vegetables were generally inclined to keep higher by seed treatment with FPL during their initial growth.
